Cables and Rollers — The Hidden Heart of Your Garage Door
Cables and rollers do most of the actual work on your garage door. Cables transfer the spring’s lifting force to the door itself. Rollers guide the door smoothly along the tracks. When either component wears out, the symptoms are usually the same — noise, shaking, sluggish operation, and eventually total failure. Catching wear early means a quick repair; ignoring it means damaged panels, bent tracks, and burned-out openers.
We replace cables and rollers across West Valley City, Salt Lake City, Sandy, West Jordan, Murray, Bountiful, and the rest of Salt Lake County. We always replace components in pairs (both cables together, all rollers together) because partial replacements lead to imbalance and second service calls. Most jobs are completed within an hour. Call (801) 682-7586 and Brandon will answer personally.
What We Repair on Cables and Rollers:
Garage Door Services I Offer
I install and repair garage doors for homes and businesses across Salt Lake County, southern Davis County and Park City. Every job comes with a tune-up. I tighten loose bolts, lube the moving parts and adjust the springs if they need it, then inspect the whole door so you know its full condition. I’m licensed and insured, and the work is warranty-backed.

Signs Your Cables or Rollers Need Replacement
MOST “NOISY GARAGE DOOR” PROBLEMS ARE CABLES OR ROLLERS — HERE’S HOW TO TELL.
Cables and rollers wear gradually, then fail suddenly. The wear shows up as noise, shaking, and sluggish operation weeks or months before the actual failure. Recognizing the signs early means a flat-rate repair instead of an emergency call after a snapped cable damages a panel or a broken roller pulls the door off its tracks. Here’s what to watch for:
- A loud grinding or scraping during operation. Almost always worn rollers dragging against the tracks. Steel rollers especially get loud as they age. Replacement (often with quieter nylon rollers) eliminates this noise.
- Door shakes or vibrates while moving. Indicates rollers binding in the tracks, sometimes loose hinges, occasionally cable wear creating uneven lifting. Diagnostic visit identifies which.
- Visible fraying on the lift cables. Cables run along each side of the door from the bottom bracket up to the spring shaft. If you see fraying strands or rust spots, the cable is approaching failure. Replace before it snaps.
- Cable looks loose or hanging slack. A cable that’s no longer under tension usually means it’s come off the drum, stretched beyond useful range, or partially failed. Stop using the door and call.
- Rollers visibly worn, cracked, or missing. Each roller should look round and intact. Cracked rollers, worn flat spots, or missing rollers entirely all need replacement.
- Door rises unevenly or slowly. Cable wear or roller binding causes one side to lift slower than the other. The door may “jerk” during operation. Continued use causes track damage.
- Squeaking or chirping sounds. Often dry or worn rollers. Sometimes resolved with lubrication during a tune-up; chronic squeaking means roller replacement is needed.
- Loud bang followed by stuck door. A snapped cable usually announces itself with a loud bang. Door becomes unsafe to operate — don’t try to use the opener.
If your door is showing any of these signs, call (801) 682-7586. Catching cable and roller wear early means a flat-rate repair completed in under an hour. Continuing to operate the door usually causes secondary damage that turns a quick repair into a much larger repair.
Cable & Roller Components We Replace
WE STOCK PARTS FOR EVERY COMMON GARAGE DOOR SETUP IN UTAH HOMES.
Cables and rollers come in different sizes, materials, and weight ratings depending on your door. The right replacement parts depend on your door’s weight, height, and operating conditions. Here’s what we work with:
- Standard Lift Cables. Galvanized steel cables in 1/8″ or 7/64″ diameter — sized to match your door’s weight and spring system. We replace cables in pairs (both sides together) because they wear at the same rate. Stocked in our trucks for same-day replacement.
- Heavy-Duty Cables for Larger Doors. Wider 16-foot and 18-foot doors common in newer Sandy and South Jordan builds need heavier-gauge cables (5/32″ or larger). We carry these sizes for the heavier residential applications.
- Steel Rollers (Standard Replacement). The factory-standard roller type on most garage doors. Durable but noisy as they age. Available with sealed bearings or open bearings depending on application. Most affordable replacement option.
- Nylon Rollers (Premium/Quiet Upgrade). Sealed-bearing nylon rollers that run dramatically quieter than steel and last 2-3x longer. Ideal for attached garages with bedrooms above or any noise-sensitive setup. Most popular upgrade we install.
- Heavy-Duty Steel Rollers (Commercial). Reinforced rollers for commercial doors, heavy-use residential, or properties with frequent door cycling. Higher cycle ratings and weight capacity than residential standard rollers.
- Bottom Brackets and Cable Drums. The bottom brackets (where cables attach to the door) and cable drums (the spool above the door that the cables wind around) sometimes need replacement alongside cables. Worn brackets or grooved drums can cut new cables prematurely if not replaced together.
We assess what’s actually worn on arrival and recommend the right components for your situation. Standard replacement, premium upgrades, or commercial-grade — we stock the parts and complete most jobs in a single visit. Call (801) 682-7586 to schedule.

Common Cable & Roller Issues We Repair
DIAGNOSTIC AND REPAIR APPROACH FOR EACH ISSUE WE SEE MOST OFTEN.
Cable issues and roller issues are diagnostically related — and often co-occur. A snapped cable damages rollers as the door drops. Worn rollers stress cables unevenly. Most service calls end up addressing both components even when the customer only noticed one symptom.
Below are the six most common scenarios we repair across Salt Lake County. Three relate to cables (frayed, snapped, off-drum), three relate to rollers (worn steel, broken/cracked, nylon upgrade). Each represents a specific repair approach.
When you call (801) 682-7586, we’ll ask a few quick questions to identify which scenario matches your situation. Most issues are quoted as flat-rate repairs over the phone before we schedule. We carry parts for all six scenarios in our trucks for same-day completion.
Visible fraying, rust spots, or stretching on lift cables means failure is coming. Catching fraying cables early means scheduled replacement instead of an emergency snap. We always replace cables in pairs because they wear at the same rate — replacing only the worn side leads to a second service call within months.
A loud bang followed by a door that won’t lift evenly usually means a cable snapped under tension. Door becomes unsafe to operate. We respond same-day with replacement cables and check for collateral damage to panels and tracks — snapped cables often pull doors off their tracks.
Sometimes cables come off the drum (the spool above the door) without snapping. Door may still operate but unsafely — usually results in cables jamming or eventually breaking. We re-spool the cable if it’s still in good condition or replace if showing wear.
The most common roller issue we see. Factory-standard steel rollers wear out and become noisy after 8-10 years. Most homeowners assume the noise is the opener and consider replacing the whole opener — when really, a simple nylon roller upgrade fixes the noise entirely.
A roller that’s cracked, missing pieces, or seized up causes the door to bind and can pull itself out of the track. Common warning sign before an off-track failure. We replace any failed rollers and inspect the rest of the set — if one is failing, others are usually close behind.
Our most-recommended upgrade. Sealed-bearing nylon rollers run dramatically quieter than steel, last 2-3x longer, and significantly improve daily quality of life — especially on attached garages near bedrooms. Most popular upgrade for noise-sensitive homes across Salt Lake County.
Why Professional Cable & Roller Repair Matters
CABLES UNDER TENSION CAN INJURE — DIY ATTEMPTS ARE A COMMON CAUSE OF GARAGE INJURIES IN UTAH.
Cables and rollers seem like simple components, but they hold significant tension and require correct sizing for the door. DIY repairs frequently fail prematurely or cause secondary damage. Beyond safety, professional service also catches the related issues that homeowners miss. Here’s what professional repair gets you:
- Safety. Lift cables hold hundreds of pounds of tension. Releasing them incorrectly during DIY repair can cause the cable to whip free, the door to drop suddenly, or springs to release with violent force. We have the tools and process to handle this safely.
- Correct component sizing. Cables come in different diameters and materials based on door weight. Rollers come in different bearing types, sizes, and load ratings. Wrong components fail prematurely, damage tracks, or cause imbalance. We measure and match correctly.
- Pair replacement standard. Cables and rollers wear at the same rate — replacing only the worn one means a return service call when its partner fails 6 months later. We always replace in pairs because that’s actually cheaper for the customer over time, even if upfront cost is slightly higher.
- Hidden damage inspection. Cable wear often comes from worn drums or bottom brackets. Roller failure often damages tracks. We inspect for the related issues during the repair so we don’t put new components on aging hardware that’ll fail them again.
- Proper rebalancing. New cables and rollers change the door’s operating dynamics. We rebalance the door and recalibrate opener force settings after replacement so the entire system works correctly together. Skipping this step is the most common DIY mistake.
For most Salt Lake County homeowners, professional cable and roller repair costs less than the value of an afternoon spent fighting with parts that aren’t quite the right size — and dramatically less than emergency room costs if something goes wrong. Call (801) 682-7586 to schedule.

FAQs About Cable & Roller Repair
Quick Cable & Roller Facts
Pro Tip: If your garage door has gotten noticeably louder over the past year, the fix is almost always rollers — not the opener. Most homeowners spend hundreds replacing perfectly good openers when a nylon roller upgrade would have eliminated the noise entirely. Call before you replace your opener for noise reasons.
Wasatch Front Climate Impact: Cold winter mornings are when cables and rollers fail most. Steel rollers contract and run louder in sub-freezing temps, and freeze-thaw cycles stress cable strands at the bottom drum where moisture pools. If you hear new grinding or popping noises during a cold snap, don’t wait — small cable fraying becomes a snapped cable in days, not weeks. We respond same-day across Salt Lake County year-round.
