Why Murray Garage Door Springs Fail

Murray’s housing stock is dominated by 1950s-1980s post-war construction — ranch-style homes around Murray Park, Colonial Revivals along Vine Street, and brick bungalows from the original historic core. Most original garage door springs in these homes have been replaced once, are due for round two, and were never specified for 40+ years of daily cycling through Utah’s climate.

Uplifting Garage Doors offers same-day spring repair across every Murray neighborhood, with most jobs completed in under an hour. I’m Brandon — I dispatch personally and bring the right spring sizes on the truck. Call (801) 682-7586 the moment your spring breaks.

Common Spring Repair Situations:

  • Broken torsion springs in 1950s-1980s Murray homes near end of second cycle
  • Loud “bang” sound from the garage with the door stuck closed
  • Door that lifts a few inches then drops back down
  • Standard 16×7 single-car door springs needing replacement
  • Original springs in older Murray homes from the 1960s-70s
  • Worn springs on doors used daily for 40+ years
  • High-cycle spring upgrades for daily heavy use

What’s Included in a Professional Murray Spring Repair

A broken garage door spring is one of the most dangerous parts of a home repair — these springs hold enormous tension, and improper handling causes serious injury every year. Every Murray spring repair I do follows full safety protocol from the moment I arrive until the door cycles cleanly again.

  • Both springs replaced in pairs — never single replacement on dual-spring doors
  • Spring weight matched to door’s actual measured weight, not a generic spec
  • Cable inspection and replacement if frayed (broken springs often damage cables)
  • Drum, bearing, and end-bracket inspection on every job
  • Balance verification and torque calibration before I leave the driveway
  • Same-day stock of the spring sizes most common in older Murray homes

Most spring repairs in Murray take 45-60 minutes from arrival to door cycling normally. If the spring break damaged other components — common in older Murray installs where multiple parts are at end of life together — I’ll show you what needs replacement before doing anything beyond the spring itself.

Garage Door Services I Offer

I install and repair garage doors for homes and businesses across Salt Lake County, southern Davis County and Park City. Every job comes with a tune-up. I tighten loose bolts, lube the moving parts and adjust the springs if they need it, then inspect the whole door so you know its full condition. I’m licensed and insured, and the work is warranty-backed.

How Murray Climate Wears Down Garage Door Springs

Murray sits in the same high-desert valley as the rest of Salt Lake County, putting garage door springs through severe wear patterns. Springs lose elasticity faster when they cycle through summer highs above 100°F and winter lows in the single digits. Cold-weather brittleness is the single most common cause of sudden spring breaks in Murray — and it hits older springs hardest.

Most original Murray springs from the 1960s-70s are well past their rated 10,000-cycle life. Even with average daily use, a 50-year-old spring has cycled through 30,000-40,000 lift-and-lower events. The steel fatigues, the coils lose pre-tension, and the spring eventually snaps on a cold morning when the metal is most brittle. Climate doesn’t cause the failure on its own, but it sets the timing.

Uplifting Garage Doors specs every Murray spring replacement for the door’s actual weight, cycle frequency, and climate exposure. Standard springs are rated for 10,000 cycles, but high-cycle springs (15,000-25,000) make sense for any door used more than 3-4 times a day. The right spring upfront prevents the next emergency call — especially in older Murray homes where one component failure usually signals others coming.

They responded quickly and were able to get in to see us the next day. The issue was fixed promptly at a very reasonable rate. We have their sticker up in the garage and will be sure to call them first if we ever need anything else.

My garage broke while we were out of town so coming home to that was extremely stressful. Brandon was so quick to respond, came to check out our garage same day, and had the parts to fix it on hand so we are back up and running. Very grateful for his expertise!

Update 1.5 years later. Brandon came back out to examine an interesting noise, turns out that a trim nail popped out and was scraping on the door. He fixed that, nailed the trim again, and lubed the rollers. I won’t use anyone but Brandon for my garage door needs! Our experience with Brandon and Uplifting Garage Doors was incredible! Brandon took time to understand what our issues were, help us find a solution to our issues, and install new garage doors, springs, and decorative hardware. Although there were a few issues with a couple sections of the new doors, which were caused by the manufacturer of the door, he took care of getting the sections that needed to be replaced done and installed the new sections quickly. He has excellent customer service and follow up!

FAQ’s from Murray Homeowners About Spring Repair

Most same-day spring calls in Murray get answered within 30-60 minutes of your call. Murray is one of the closest service areas to my West Valley City shop — drive time is usually 10-15 minutes. I’ll give you a firm ETA the moment you call (801) 682-7586.

Yes. Older Murray garages often have smaller-diameter springs that aren’t stocked at typical big-box stores. I carry the historical sizing range on the truck and can source unusual specs same-day when needed. The age of your garage doesn’t slow down the repair.

Not safely. A broken torsion spring means the full weight of the door is unsupported — 150-250 pounds depending on the door. Trying to lift it manually can cause back injury, pinched fingers, or door panel damage. Call for repair and leave the door alone until I arrive.

On dual-spring doors, yes — always. Springs wear at the same rate, so the second spring is usually within months of failing too. Replacing only the broken one means another emergency call coming. The cost difference is small; the inconvenience saved is large.

Most spring repairs in Murray take 45-60 minutes from arrival to the door cycling cleanly. Complex jobs — like cable damage from the broken spring, or older installs where multiple components have failed together — can take longer, but I’ll tell you the expected time on the call.

Standard torsion springs are rated for 10,000 cycles — about 7-10 years of average residential use. High-cycle springs (15,000-25,000 cycles) last 15-25 years and make sense for any door used more than 3-4 times a day. In older Murray homes where the original spring lasted 40 years, a new high-cycle spring will often outlast the homeowner’s time in the house.

Often yes in older Murray homes. If the spring break damaged the cables, replacement is automatic. If the cables are 30+ years old or visibly frayed, replacement during the spring job saves a second visit. I inspect cables, rollers, drums, and bearings on every spring repair — and in older installs, multiple components often hit end of life together.

Climate Impact on Murray Garage Door Springs:

  • Cold-weather steel brittleness
  • Summer heat cycle expansion
  • Daily temperature swing fatigue
  • Dry air rust on uncoated springs

Pro Tip: In older Murray homes where springs have been in service 30+ years, replacing them with high-cycle springs (rated 15,000-25,000 cycles) costs slightly more upfront but typically outlasts the homeowner’s remaining time in the property.
